Takeaways from the Browns Win in a Winter Wonderland on Primetime
The Steelers and Browns got locked into one of the weirdest games all season on primetime yesterday. The weather became a major factor in this game as the temperature dipped below freezing and the snow started falling rapidly towards the end of the game. On paper, it would appear that the Steelers would have the clear advantage given that their nature is to win with tough defense and controlling time of possession as they did for much of this game. However, it would be Jameis Winston and the Browns that would seize the day with a touchdown drive in the final minute that would secure the Browns their third win of the season. So what are the takeaways from the first snow game of the season?
Browns: Evaluate Jameis Winston’s Viability as the long-term Starter
Despite the Browns trading away Amari Cooper at the trade deadline to Buffalo, Jameis Winston has shown flashes with this offense to perform well enough to make this offense viable. Last night, this offense could not run the ball efficiently against the Steelers’ dominant rush defense. Nick Chubb ran the ball 20 times and averaged just under three yards per touch which put this offense consistently behind the chains. However, Winston was able to pick up the slack when it mattered the most as the Browns converted on all four fourth-down attempts throughout this game. Winston has shown throughout this season, and in this game, that he should be considered a starting quarterback for the long-term for some teams around the NFL after this season.
Steelers: This Offensive line is Problematic
Myles Garrett dominated this offensive line from start to finish in this game. He had three sacks and forced a fumble which was a critical turning point for the Browns in this game. The Steelers could not run the ball efficiently on the ground all game either. Between Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, they ran the ball 27 times for only 86 yards. They couldn’t clear holes in this Browns defensive line which resulted in them being behind the chains themselves. Russell Wilson did his best to create opportunities through the passing game, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to win the game. If the Steelers’ offensive line can’t stop premier edge rushers from wreaking havoc moving forward, the Steelers’ offense will likely be unable to survive long in the playoffs.
