Takeaways From the Mets First Two Weeks of Spring Training
Despite a historic comeback season in 2024, and the signing of Juan Soto, the Mets have some work to do during Spring Training. Heading into their third matchup against the Astros the Mets have not won a single game since their first on matchup on Saturday where they defeated the Astros 6-2. Mets fans may be unfazed by this as they know the pattern all too well. Look solid, lose a bunch and, all hope for that matter, only to be given a shred of hope after an unbelievable series of wins. The cycle is expected, but still, it is early in Spring Training and anything could happen. Here are three of the biggest takeaways from the first two weeks of Spring Training.
Replacing Nick Madrigal:
From the outside this roster looks nearly flawless, a team that could claw its way back into the postseason just like they did in 2024. However, who they replace Nick Madrigal with could make a huge difference. Madrigal was supposed to be the key backup infielder in the Mets’ rotation, but after suffering a dislocated shoulder in their recent matchup against the Nationals, it is unlikely that he will return in time for Opening Day. With options like Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty and Jared Young the Mets’ have a tough decision on their hands.
The Bullpen:
In a bullpen, experience is everything. Though the Mets’ bullpen looks completely different than it did at the start of the 2024 season, the experience that relievers Reed Garrett and Jose Buttó were able to get will serve them greatly in 2025. Clay Holmes, a Yankees fan’s worst nightmare, may benefit a different bullpen in New York. Holmes pitched a stunning three innings for the Mets on Saturday with three strikeouts, no hits and no runs earned. Maybe he’s found his footing finally or maybe he’s just a better fit to pitch before the seventh inning stretch.
The Bats:
With Juan Soto and Fransisco Lindor together in a lineup, the Mets seem to have the power they need offensively. Unfortunately, we have yet to see that talent emerge. Soto and Lindor both went without hits in their game against the Marlins on Wednesday. In the Mets only win so far, neither Soto nor Lindor were in the offensive line up that day. With other key players like Pete Alonso on the roster though, once Lindor and Soto find their footing the Mets’ offensive game will be a dangerous one.
