The Champions League 2024-25 Draw: New Format and Results

The UEFA Champions League, up until the 2023-24 season, has followed a familiar format. The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four, with each team playing six matches, including home and away, against their group opponents. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stages, which consist of two-legged ties culminating in a one-off final. This structure has been in place for many years, allowing fans to enjoy a straightforward and competitive progression from group stages to the Champions League Final.

Starting from the 2024-25 season, the Champions League will shift to a new format, expanding from 32 to 36 teams and replacing the group stage with a single league table. Each team will now play eight different opponents instead of the traditional round-robin within groups. The top eight teams from this league stage will automatically advance to the knockout rounds, while teams ranked ninth to 24th will enter a playoff to secure the remaining spots in the last 16. This change is designed to increase the number of matches and create a more dynamic and varied competition. With most clubs making significant signings, notably global superstar Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid making some waves, it will be a year to remember.

The decision to change the format is driven by several factors. UEFA aims to make the competition more engaging for both fans and broadcasters by increasing the number of high-profile matches throughout the tournament. Additionally, this new format addresses the growing demands for more competitive balance and ensures that teams face a wider array of opponents, which could reduce the predictability that has sometimes characterized the group stages. The shift reflects UEFA’s response to the evolving landscape of European football, aiming to maintain the Champions League's status as the pinnacle of club football.

This change also means that the competition will likely see more dramatic shifts in standings, as teams won’t be as confined to the outcomes within a small group. The broader range of opponents in the league stage could result in surprising outcomes and a more thrilling path to the knockout rounds. Fans can expect a fresh and more intense Champions League experience, with every match carrying significant weight towards the ultimate goal of reaching the Champions League Final. The draw took place on August 29th, 2024 with much anticipation.

The sides were divided into four pots, and drawn and shown their run of fixtures. This displayed their home and away results. This format adds four more teams as opposed to the traditional format. Many have likened such to that of the European Super League which was a prior proposal made by the President of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, and other participants.
