The Giants and Cowboys Takeaways

NFL

The Giants did not bring home a win at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night. Instead, they suffered another loss this week against the Dallas Cowboys. This game may not have been pretty, but the Giants did their best. The final score of this game was 20-15, it wasn’t terrible and the Giants had a chance to actually beat them. Here are several takeaways from this game.

The Giants struggled in the red zone. They knew how to get the ball down the field, however, their rushing game was not the best that it should have been. The Cowboys have the lowest-graded run defense currently in the NFL and the Giants could not seem to find a way to take advantage of this. They recorded 26 rushing yards on 24 attempts, an average of 1.1 per carry. The ball was given to Devin Singletary to run on multiple occasions but the Giants were only able to move it very little. The Giants did not score any touchdowns in this game. They had a hard time getting the ball into the end zone. This is the second time this season that the Giants have gone without scoring a touchdown and only kicked field goals.

Daniel Jones actually had a nearly solid game this week. It was not perfect but he still played well on the field. He threw  281 passing yards and had a completion rate of 73 percent. He had one turnover in the last 15 seconds of the game. Jones threw a Hail Mary, but instead of landing in the hands of the Giants, it was caught by the Cowboys. On the other hand, he delivered strong results and his offensive line made sure that he was protected during this game.

There was one big downfall of the Giants takeaways and that was Malik Nabers. Nabers was having a great night on the field. He had 12 catches for 115 yards. He now has a total of 35 receptions for 386 yards and three touchdowns in four games so far this season. However, he was getting knocked around on nearly every play. Jones attempted to throw the ball down the field to him but the passes were pretty much always blocked by the Cowboys’ defense. The night ended with Nabers catching a pass from Jones in mid-air and landing face mask first on the sideline. He lay there for about a minute before being picked up by the Giants' medical staff and walked into the blue tent, after which he was taken to the locker room. Nabers was then diagnosed with a concussion and is now on the concussion protocol for the next week or two. The Giants will have to play their next two games without him and this may shake up their offense.

Overall, the Giants played well despite their few downfalls in this game. The Giants have suffered two crushing losses to divisional opponents so far this season. They will now gear up for their next game and the schedule doesn’t get any easier from here. On October 6th, they will play the Seattle Seahawks. It is unclear if Nabers will play and where they will go from here. The Giants have been playing much better, so hopefully, they will be able to bring the heat for the rest of the season.
