The Giants Offseason Rebuild
The New York Football Giants season is officially over, and many fans can be relieved of all the losses and decisions that have been made over the course of this season. Giants fans have been having a hard time watching this team try to navigate themselves. It has just been one downfall after another. However, the offseason needs to have a lot of thought put into it for next year's team.
The first thing the Giants are starting with is their current management, which is keeping both Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen. They have had thoughts and ideas for their team's vision for next season. Giants Owner John Mara believes in the two of them and wants to continue with the duo for right now. Next season may be a different question for them.
Schoen has not made a lot of great decisions for the Giants, and they need to rebuild the quarterback position. The Giants have landed one of the top three spots in the draft, and they are in desperate need of a quarterback, among other areas. The Giants were hoping to land the number one pick, but instead, they are in number three. Fans are hoping that they find a way to trade up or they are able to get a quarterback. Most likely, the Giants will land someone other than Cam Ward who many fans had wanted to be the next Giants quarterback next season. They have plenty of options when the market opens for both the draft in April and in Free Agency. They need to decide carefully as to who is going to fill the position. All three of their quarterbacks walk as their season comes to a close. They definitely need to find someone who is going to be the backup to whoever they pick.
The Giants also need to take time to shed the players that have not been great for them. Evan Neal has not done a great job for the team, and many fans have wanted him not to play on the field for a while, but the Giants have had no choice with how many injuries there have been in the left tackle position. To top that off, several of their truly great players are going into free agency during the off season, which is going to leave a big gap for the Giants. They are losing big names such as Jason Pinnock, Isaiah Simmons, Darius Slayton, Drew Lock, and Tim Boyle. There are many more that are leaving the New York Giants, too. That said, Schoen and Daboll have their work cut out for them. Schoen needs to think of the team and not about the salary cap. He needs to figure out what they truly need and come together with Daboll and his coaching staff to see what actually needs to be filled. It’s not even just one side; it’s both the offensive and defensive sides.
During this offseason, the Giants really need to figure out who they are. They need to take the time to work on how they play and make better connections both inside and outside. It seems that the trust is not there when it comes to passing the ball. They need to get their heads back into the game and show that they want to make the playoffs next year. The Giants are getting ready to head into another playoff drought, and they haven’t been to the playoffs in several years. Daniel Jones was the last quarterback to take them to the first round of the playoffs. If Schoen picks a decent quarterback and can connect them with the rest of the team for the entire season and not play quarterback carousel by having them changed from week to week, then the Giants will be a truly great team once again. It’s going to take all of them to pull together one truly great NFL team.
