The Giants Quarterback Controversy
The Giants just keep sending themselves down a path of no return for this season. Coach Brian Daboll made a very controversial announcement to everyone and there seems to be more of an issue than people think in the quarterback position. It was announced on Tuesday by the head coach that provided Drew Lock was healthy enough, he would play.
Lock came to the team and was sent to an MRI after complaining about soreness after this past weekend's game against the Saints. It was confirmed that he would start in this coming weekend's game and then immediately backed out before Lock went for his MRI. This has so many of the Giants fans scratching their heads because he commented that he would start if he was healthy enough to play.
Daboll has been flip-flopping on his quarterbacks all season. There has been nothing really settled on what the franchise needs but it all depends on what is needed from week to week. It’s not a great look for his team and it currently looks as if they are taking and his decisions are causing the franchise to fall apart at the moment because he can’t do anything else about his current situation.
As of today, it was announced that Lock is walking around in a boot and he will not be playing in this coming weekend's game against the Ravens. Who knows what the rest of the season is going to look like with Lock being out with nobody knowing for how long? That all being said, Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback on Sunday.
Lock has only played in the last two games. He completed 51.9% of his passes for a combined 405 yards, two interceptions, and no touchdowns in losses to both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints. He has become the first quarterback to ever start a game with eight straight incompletions. He seemed promising with his legs on the field and ran for a team-high of 59 yards. It was not a huge help for the Giants though.
DeVito was named the starting quarterback when the Giants benched former starting quarterback Daniel Jones. He has always been a fan favorite and this is one of the many reasons he was chosen to start. He started at the game against Tampa Bay. He went for 21 of 49 for 227 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. DeVito knows how to run the team and what he needs to do, he has done it before and he can do it again. He took over for several games last season. Since the game against Tampa Bay, DeVito since then has suffered a forearm contusion but seems to be ready to go. He played for one drive in last weekend's game to prove to fans that he can still play. When he did enter the field, fans started to cheer and get excited to see him again.
DeVito is what everyone wants and Lock is what the franchise needs. They are both decent quarterbacks, however they are not enough to have them start for an entire season. Lock has gotten the team closer in points and DeVito has been working his way up the charts during his time with the Giants. They have both been really trying to get the Giants to score more than an average of 14.9 points per game.
The Giants are hugely struggling in their quarterback position and they don’t have any answers as to what to do. Daboll was determined to have started this weekend but with him being injured there is no other choice. The Giants have to get this fixed and pick one guy to stick with. It’s as if one gets healed and the other one goes down. If it comes down to it, they might as well just stick the third quarterback, Tim Boyle, into the starting position for the rest of the season with the very few games that are left.
