Introducing WNBA players to a completely new audience has only boosted the league’s popularity. Additionally, social media platforms played an important role in this development. These platforms enable players and celebrities to interact directly with one another and their followers, thereby expanding their personal brands and connections across the web, not to mention the fact that some of the most influential players are still in college. Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, both from the UConn Women’s Basketball Team, sat in Coco Guaff’s player box during her US Open match in late August. Fans of both basketball and tennis were thrilled to see the blossoming relationship between the three athletes. Also in late August 2024 Olympic Medalist Hailey Van Lith of TCU attended a Seattle Mariners game and threw out the first pitch alongside another 2024 Olympic Medalist. Followers took to social media to express their admiration for Hailey’s throwing ability and fashion sense. Bridging the gap between women’s basketball and other sports can result in increased emotional and financial support as more people become invested in their careers and achievements. Engaging diverse audiences and creating buzz around events continues to evolve the landscape of women’s basketball, reflecting the interplay between sports, entertainment, and digital media.

BREAKING BARRIERS

The increased presence of celebrities and athletes surrounding the WNBA has created a unified front. This collective voice can be an effective and powerful way to promote advocacy. Many WNBA players, other athletes, and celebrities support similar causes. Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces discussed the "huge misconception" about the differences between the WNBA and NBA on The Residency Podcast in 2022. She stated that WNBA players were not wanting equal salary as NBA players, but rather "asking to get paid the same revenue shared." The Bryant Family actively supports the league, as evidenced by their support of the New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu. Some teams, like the Chicago Sky and the Atlanta Dream, host Mental Health Awareness Nights. Last year, each WNBA team chose a local women’s health organization to represent during the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup. Three teams, the Las Vegas Aces, the Chicago Sky, and the Seattle Storm chose organizations that highlight improving mental health. In 2022, the Women’s National Basketball Association, the National Basketball Players Association, and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation collaborated to promote positivity and mental health during the month of May.
