The U.S. Open Is Open

The U.S. Open is perhaps one of the most popular and influential tennis tournaments ever conceived. Audiences from across the continental United States flock to see it every year. Perhaps second only to Wimbledon, the U.S. Open is a contest of champions that forces players to use every tool in their kit. Plus, it also pushes their nerves to the absolute limit.

I found myself attending this event with family and friends some time ago. Despite the dilapidated state of the arena exterior and the bizarre electronic tickets, there were indeed remarkable tennis players competing at their best within the arena. Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff were in attendance, among others. Djokovic has already performed well at the Cincinnati Open, and he will likely do his best here as well. While tennis may seem like a game where you just hit a ball back and forth, and it is indeed, there is a bit more to it than that. It requires speed, skill, strength, and quick reflexes, among other things. It's not enough to hit the ball, you have to be the ball.

As one watches the sport, one must ponder what it takes to be truly good at it. A perfect tennis player must follow the rules of the game. They must outplay their competitor, ideally running circles around the opposition. Additionally, a tennis player must be prepared to do exit interviews and even sign autographs. Strangely, those who perform well in sports also become celebrities. Not everyone can have a talent for something.

Incidentally, the name “U.S. Open” may mislead some. The name implies that it is a contest between people from across the United States, but it is, in fact, a contest between people from China, Italy, and other nations. A more apt title would be the “World Open” or “Nationwide Open.” However apparently, taking place in the USA is enough to qualify a contest for being called the “U.S. Open.” When a person takes up a sport, they must be prepared to learn the language of it.

So in conclusion, this U.S. Open is going to be a shell shocker. Does it get better every year? That's hard to prove. However, it is most certainly different every year, and always a pleasure to see the best and brightest tennis players duking it out for fame and glory. This isn't anything devoted tennis buffs would want to miss.
