Three-Time Cy Young Award Winner Signs with the Giants

MLB

Justin Verlander has agreed to sign a one-year deal, pending a physical, with the San Francisco Giants. This move will add depth for the Giants in their rotation and will also add a veteran presence in the locker room. Once one of the best pitchers in baseball, Verlander will have a lot to offer both in the dugout and on the field. The $15 million payday isn’t bad either, as this may be Verlander’s last contract.

There are not many pitchers in baseball who have had more illustrious careers than Justin Verlander. In his career, Verlander has won an MVP Award, three Cy Young Awards, two ERA titles, one Pitching Triple Crown, and has won two World Series titles while making nine all-star appearances. He has also shown prowess in the postseason as well, with an ALCS MVP Award to his name. Despite posting his worst ERA since his rookie season last year, Verlander is not far removed from a solid season in 2023. Deteriorating health will always be an issue with signing a player who has turned 42 before the season starts. However, Verlander will remain competitive with a fastball that can reach up to 97 miles per hour. It is also worth mentioning that Verlander was able to win a Cy Young Award in 2022, his age-39 season proving there is still plenty of gas left in the tank.

For a team that needed pitching help, Verlander makes a great addition this offseason. Additionally, his ability to help the younger arms on the Giants’ pitching staff makes this a solid pickup for the team. As Verlander enters his 20th big league season, he will look to win his third career championship. After a solid performance last year, the Giants will hope that the addition of Verlander can help them move even further in the playoff race.
