Tottenham Hotspurs Managerial Speculations
On June 6, 2023, Tottenham appointed former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou to lead their team. This was an exciting hire, as Postecoglou dominated the Premiership with Celtic in back-to-back seasons and won many trophies. With his high-flying and attacking tactics, Postecoglou finally looked to bring success to Tottenham, which has struggled to win trophies in the past. Unfortunately, this has not been the case, and in his second year, there has been backlash from the fans wanting the new manager already gone.
In Postecoglou’s first season, Tottenham saw immediate success, winning seven of their first nine games in the Premier League, breaking the record for most points by a manager in his first nine games. Ultimately, they finished fifth place, which was exciting for their fans, as Tottenham had ten managers in the past 10 years, and Big Ange already looked different. Tottenham has been plagued with injuries this season and has already surpassed their loss total from last year's campaign. Simply put, it has been an extremely disappointing display this season. Tottenham can advance to the Carabao Cup final despite their lack of success this season. It could be a massive turnaround for their fan base and sentiment towards Postecoglou.
Most recently, Tottenham lost to Leicester City 2-1, which puts them in 15th place for the season. They are now 8 points ahead of the relegation zone, and while they most likely won’t be relegated, it is an uncharted territory they have not been in for a long time. Most Spurs fans are asking what the problem is. Is it Postecoglou and his sometimes brash tactics? Does he not fit in the Premier League and is more suitable for somewhere else? Is Daniel Levy the issue? Under Ange, Tottenham has been some of the most high-flying attacking football I have ever seen. While there are instances where I believe he could’ve changed tactically, which would be more suitable for that particular game, the question must be asked about Daniel Levy, who is the Executive Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur. As I said, Ange is the fifth Tottenham coach in ten years. These coaches are big names; all have seen success elsewhere since leaving Tottenham. Daniel Levy is a part of the problem, and he must figure out how to financially back his managers while supporting their playing styles with suitable players. There’s no question Tottenham has struggled mightily because of their injuries this season, but if they can’t gain momentum and pick up some wins, the noise for Ange Postecoglou to be gone will only get louder.
