Two-Time AL Cy Young Award Winner Announces Retirement
37-year-old starting pitcher Corey Kluber just announced he was retiring after 13 seasons in the majors. Throughout his 13-year career, he’s played on five different teams. The two-time Cy Young Award winner wasn’t the same as he was on the mound during his award-winning seasons. After being moved to the bullpen in 2023, Kluber decided it was time to hang it up. He was once a key piece in helping the Cleveland Guardians not only be a successful team but also make the World Series in 2016. Now Corey can enjoy the retired life, and perhaps we’ll see him get hired by a team for his vast knowledge and his incredible pitching skills.
With the Boston Red Sox last season, Corey Kluber struggled tremendously. In nine starts last season, Corey put up a 3-6 record through 55 innings pitched. By the end of May, Boston decided it was best to place Kluber in the bullpen after many shaky starts on the mound. He had six appearances from the bullpen. By June 20th, Kluber would pitch his final time for the Red Sox, as he struggled with injuries for the remainder of the season. Corey would finish the 2023 season with a 7.04 ERA with 42 strikeouts.
During his 13-year career, he won two American League Cy Young Awards in 2014, and 2017. In 2014, Kluber went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA through 235 innings pitched with 269 strikeouts. A few years later, Corey went 18-4 with a 2.25 ERA through 203 innings pitched with 265 strikeouts. Kluber was an all-star three times. The 37-year-old pitcher led the American League in wins in 2014 and 2017, as well as leading the American League in ERA in 2017. On May 19th, 2021, while playing for the New York Yankees Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter against the team Kluber played with just a year prior, the Texas Rangers.
