Two-Time All-Star Closer Signs with the Mets
Despite entering free agency following an up-and-down 2024 season, closer Clay Holmes remained a viable option for several teams looking to upgrade their bullpen for the 2025 season. After testing the free agent market, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the New York Mets and Holmes have agreed to a three-year deal worth $38 million, which includes an opt-out after the second season. The signing of Holmes provides the Mets with another veteran arm to strengthen their bullpen heading into next season. Holmes will be looking to bounce back from his shaky 2024 season with the Yankees and put together a more consistent performance, similar to his 2022 season, which earned him his first All-Star nomination.
During the 2024 season, Holmes experienced both great success and significant struggles, especially in the latter part of the year. He appeared to be on track for another excellent season, as he did not allow an earned run in his first 20 games, spanning from late March to mid-May. His early success earned him a spot in his second career All-Star Game. However, Holmes' performance declined afterward, with two of his worst months coming in June, when he posted a 5.59 ERA, and in September, when he finished with a 6.00 ERA. His inconsistency in the second half of the season led to him losing the closer role for the Yankees. Holmes ultimately finished the season with a 3.14 ERA and an MLB-high 13 blown saves.
Holmes’ struggles were a step back from his 2023 season when he posted a 2.86 ERA, a career-high 71 strikeouts, and 24 saves in 63 innings pitched. Despite his struggles last season, heading into 2025, Holmes remains a valuable asset in the back end of the bullpen, especially when needed most. If Holmes can return to his previous success as a ground ball pitcher, he could play a crucial role in the Mets’ success next season, as they have high expectations for the upcoming year. The Mets are likely to rely on him in crucial moments, hoping to harness his potential to contribute positively moving forward.
