Two-Time Stanley Cup Champion Defenseman Ian Cole Signs with the Hockey Club

NHL

In his 14-year career, veteran defenseman Ian Cole has been around the block and has laced up the skates several times in a highly decorated NHL career. Last season with the Canucks, who he signed a one-year deal in free agency with, Cole provided Vancouver with a veteran defensive presence on the ice as they looked to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Despite the Canucks not fulfilling their end goal, Cole remained a consistent player for Vancouver, as the team included several young and up-and-coming players, such as Quinn Hughes and Nils Hoglander. Entering free agency, Cole was looking to join a team that has all the pieces needed to make a deep postseason run next season. Now, the brand new expansion franchise the Utah Hockey Club has signed Cole to a one-year deal, worth $3.1 million.

From 2007 to 2010, Cole, now 35, played three seasons at the University of Notre Dame. Cole was drafted by the St. Louis Blues with the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. After completing his junior year at Notre Dame, Cole turned pro. Throughout his NHL career, Cole has gained recognition for his reliable defense, leadership qualities, and potent hitting. Throughout his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2014 to 2018, the seasoned defenseman saw his greatest NHL success. Cole was a key member of the Penguins' 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup-winning teams. Cole finished with nine goals, fifty assists, and 59 points in his Penguins career.

Cole is well-known for his tough play, shot-blocking skills, and ability to kill penalties. He has been a dependable player on the blue line for a long time. Cole will be an asset to the Hockey Club because of his capacity to lead by example, play significant defensive minutes, and guide younger players. Cole's long career has been paved with success as he has demonstrated his ability to be a reliable stay-at-home defenseman. Cole is well-positioned to play a significant role with the Hockey Club as they strive for success next season thanks to his established track record and consistent play.
