Two-Time Super Bowl Champion Cornerback Receives Franchise Tag

NFL

After claiming his second Super Bowl Championship last season, as the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22, cornerback L’Jarius Sneed has been informed he’ll be receiving the franchise tag by the Chiefs. There’s a possible chance both sides could work out a trade scenario or a contract extension in the near future. The two-time Super Bowl champion has become a legitimate playmaker at the cornerback position, as Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been able to leverage Sneed’s dominant pass breakup and tackling abilities into what was a fierce Chiefs’ defense in 2023. Following a 2023-24 season, where Sneed played an integral role that led to the Chiefs having one of the best defenses in the league, Sneed will look to continue bringing his playmaking abilities to the Chiefs next season.

Sneed, 27, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Chiefs. Prior to the NFL, Sneed played at Louisiana Tech University, where he put his name on the map as a game-changing defender. During his four-year collegiate career, Sneed racked up 179 total tackles, 128 solo tackles, 51 assisted tackles, 2.5 sacks, eight interceptions, and 28 passes defended. In his senior season in 2019, Sneed received honors for second-team All-Conference USA, as the former Bulldog tallied three interceptions including a pick-six in his final college season.

After being drafted by the Chiefs, Sneed’s NFL career got off to a rocky start during his rookie season, as he was limited to nine games played due to a broken collarbone that he suffered in Week three of the 2020 season. Since then, Sneed has continued his dominant cornerback play, as he has recorded 303 total tackles, 223 solo tackles, 80 assisted tackles, six and a half sacks, and ten interceptions in four seasons with the Chiefs. In 13 postseason games played, Sneed’s production goes to another level in the playoffs, as he has tallied 75 total tackles, 53 solo tackles, 22 assisted tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one interception. The franchise tag of Sneed to Kansas City will provide the Chiefs with an impact player that will continue to stifle the opposing team’s wide receivers for seasons to come.
