Two Time Super Bowl Champion Signs with the Commanders

NFL

Jonathan Jones has been in a New England Patriots uniform for his entire career. He has been a part of two Super Bowl runs. He’s also been with the Patriots’ worst years when they had a top-five draft pick. Jones has 11 interceptions in his career, including a career-high four interceptions and a pick-six this season.

The former undrafted free agent signed with New England in 2016 and immediately won a Super Bowl. He’s notched 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and 51 pass deflections. Playing in New England, Jones is familiar with playing man coverage. Sometimes he will draw the opposing team’s best wide receiver with help over the top.

The veteran will certainly benefit from being on a playoff team to get recognition or a stamp of validation. He’s excellent at peeking at the quarterback while defending his assignment in man coverage. Jones does a great job of pinning his assignment to the sideline on deep routes or out routes. On the flip side, Jones can also leverage wide receivers into the middle of the field when he knows there’s help on the inside. The biggest test of a cornerback is if they can hold their ground in man coverage when the defense sends an all-out blitz. Jones played on a team that did not blitz a ton. If the veteran goes to a blitz-happy team, he has an opportunity he can hold his ground against the best.

Other times, he will cover the opponents’ second-best wide receiver one on one. Now it has been reported by Ari Meirov that Jones and the Commanders have agreed to a one-year deal. Jones is seeking a starting role, having started in 43 of 101 games. The veteran had 56 tackles last night, a solid number for a cornerback. The more tackles a cornerback racks up, it means that he’s being targeted in coverage more.
