Two-Time Super Bowl Champion Wideout Signs with the Bills
After being released from the Chiefs ahead of the new league year in March, two-time Super Bowl Champion wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling has signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. The release of Scantling from the Chiefs was not a surprise, as the six-year receiver was entering the final season of a three-year contract with Kansas City and his release ended up saving the Chiefs $12 million in cap space. Last season, Scantling played a vital role in the Chiefs winning their second straight Super Bowl, as he hauled in a 16-yard touchdown reception in Super Bowl LVIII and caught a game-sealing reception in the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens. Now, Scantling will look to continue making key catches with the Bills next season.
In his college career, Scantling played his first two seasons (2013-14) at NC State and would transfer to USF for his final two collegiate seasons (2016-17). At NC State, Scantling would record 44 receptions for 538 receiving yards and one touchdown in 16 games played. After transferring to USF, Scantling would find an uptick in production, as he finished with 75 receptions for 1,294 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in 23 games played. In the 2018 NFL Draft, Scantling would be drafted in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers, where he spent his first four seasons. In his NFL career, Scantling has been a reliable third or fourth-option receiver who has shown the ability to come down with crucial catches in regular and postseason games.
In his NFL career with the Packers and Chiefs, Scantling has recorded 186 receptions for 3,155 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns in 92 games played. Despite having mediocre regular season stats, Scantling has managed to turn up the dial in the playoffs, as he has recorded 24 receptions for 406 receiving yards and four touchdown catches in 11 postseason games played in Green Bay and Kansas City. Last season with the Chiefs, Scantling finished the regular season with a career-low 21 catches, 315 receiving yards, and managed only one touchdown reception. Despite those career-low stats, Scantling found himself playing a crucial role in the Chiefs Super Bowl run, as he recorded 128 receiving yards and one touchdown on eight receptions last postseason.
