Veteran Max Scharping’s Contract with the Steelers
Offensive lineman Max Scharping signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on April 15th. He joins Calvin Anderson as the second veteran offensive lineman to re-sign with the Steelers this year. Scharping previously signed with the Steelers mid-way through the 2024 season. In Week eight, he logged a special teams snap in the Steelers’ victory over the New York Giants. The upcoming 2025 season is Scharping’s seventh season in the NFL. Scharping is a versatile player. He can play any of the interior offensive line positions. Scharping, Ryan McCollum, and Spencer Anderson are at the top of the Steelers’ interior line depth chart this season. There are currently 76 players under contract with the Steelers. Scharping will turn 29 this August.
According to the the National Football League Players Association, Scharping’s contract numbers are typical for a veteran player. His contract totals to a little over a million. His minimum base salary is a million. The contract also includes a guaranteed roster bonus of $167,500. Only one million of Scharping’s base salary will be counted against the Steelers’ salary cap. The minimum amount of the base salary for a player with two NFL seasons that’s charged against the salary cap is one million. Scharping’s roster bonus will also count against the team’s salary cap. The total cap charge for Scharping will be a little over a million. He displaced a player with a one million salary. This means that the Steelers used $167,500 of their available salary cap for Scharping’s contract.
Scharping played collegiate football for the Northern Illinois Huskies. During his time with the Huskies, he primarily played tackle positions on either side of the offensive line. He occasionally played offensive guard. During his sophomore, junior, and senior years, Scharping was included in the First-team All-Mid-American-Conference. Since beginning his NFL career in 2019, Scharping has played 81 regular season games. He was a starter 33 times. Scharping began his professional football career with the Houston Texans. He played for the team in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons. He also played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Commanders prior to joining the Steelers in 2024.
