Wemby Drops Triple-Double in Blowout Win Over Toronto
Even with the San Antonio Spurs being one of the worst teams in the NBA this season, they still have the most promising player perhaps ever in 7 '4 center Victor Wembanyama. Last night in a 122-99 win over the Toronto Raptors, Wemby dropped his second triple-double of the season. The rookie center recorded 27 points, 14 points, five assists, and 10 blocks in 29 minutes of play during the blowout victory. There are plenty of promising rookies within the league, but is Victor still the favorite to win Rookie of the Year?
Wemby has played in 48 games for the Spurs this season. He’s averaging about 28 minutes on the court for his rookie season while putting up about 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a steal, and three blocks a night. This is the young promising rookie’s first triple-double that involves blocks. His first triple-double came back on January 10th in a 130-108 win over the Detroit Pistons. Victor had 16 points, 12 rebounds, and ten assists in the victory. His previous record for most blocks in a single game was eight, which was back on November 18th.
The NBA has not seen a triple-double with blocks since 2018 when Anthony Davis did it. Wemby becomes the first player since Hakeem Olajuwon to record 20 plus points, ten or more rebounds, ten plus blocks, and five or more assists in a single game. He also becomes the fourth rookie to record a triple-double with blocks since Spurs’ center David Robinson. The other two players are Mark Eaton and Ralph Sampson. It’s safe to say Victor Wembanyama is already in some legendary company. Now, will he be the 2023-2024 NBA Rookie of the Year?
