Why the Saints Should Keep Taysom Hill for Another Season

NFL

After living through decades of disappointment with their team, most lifetime fans of the New Orleans Saints will attribute the arrival of Drew Brees as quarterback in 2006 to giving the team what they would need to have somewhat of a decent season. Although at initial glance he didn’t appear to possess the height or build of your typical quarterback, Brees used this to his advantage. Being underestimated by the opposing team as soon as he walked onto the field would sometimes result in a completion before the defense realized it. The term “mobile quarterback” was frequently used by commentators to describe him during games which made him unique in his position because he was willing to run the ball if necessary instead of being cautious by throwing it out of bounds to avoid injury. Due to the proven effectiveness of this strategy, it would be necessary to replace Brees with another player who could demonstrate and maintain adaptability, improvisation, and leadership.

Fortunately, that player arrived in 2017 as a gift from the NFC North: Mr. Taysom Hill after being waived by the Packers following their preseason. Working alongside the Super Bowl XLIV winning combo of Brees and head coach Sean Payton, Hill had the potential to be mentored and, when the time came, would easily replace Brees upon retirement from the Saints and the NFL altogether.  The transition would be seamless, even to the point of going unnoticed with the similarity of the numbers on their jerseys. Maintaining their reputation for now having an incredible offense, Taysom would continue this by embodying all of the fan-appreciated characteristics possessed by Brees – a keen awareness of the activity on the field, remaining calm under pressure, enjoyment of the game – including his ability to be slotted into the position of QB, TE, or WR required for a play to result in a much-needed first down or getting the ball close enough to the goal posts to be kicked in for a game-winning field goal.

From a business perspective, who wouldn’t want a “three for one” deal for only one price? Taysom Hill’s salary is a great investment for the organization, a morale boost for the team, and resuming the “Brees Legacy” which ended unceremoniously in 2021 at the conclusion of a game that was limited in attendance due to the COVID Pandemic. Following the repeated outcome of not making the playoffs with their season’s quarterbacks, the Saints management should entrust their next season to #7 himself, “The Mormon Missile”.
