Yankees Top Rays 10-6 in Tampa
On Sunday, the 20-21 Tampa Bay Rays fell 10-6 to the 27-15 New York Yankees. The Yankees are now 6-2 in their last eight games, and it seems like their pieces are coming together, as Aaron Judge blasted his 10th home run of the season on a first-pitch cutter in the fifth inning. The Yankees came alive in many ways on Sunday, as Jose Trevino blasted his third and fourth homers of the season, one being a two-run shot coming in the fourth on a 3-1 count and the other a solo shot coming in the eighth on an 0-2 count with two outs.
Luis Gil continued his breakout campaign in 2024, as he pitched six scoreless innings. The 25-year-old Gil now holds a 2.92 ERA on the season and has a stellar 3-1 record. He also posts a WHIP of 1.14. These impressive stats aren’t much of a surprise for Gil, as he’s always held potential, but it’s great for Yankees fans to see this level of success from him.
The Rays scored five runs in the seventh, cutting the Yankees 6-0 lead at the time. This was courtesy of a grand slam by Jose Siri, as well as Yankees reliever Luke Weaver hitting Rays third baseman Isaac Padres in the helmet with the bases loaded, bringing in another run. This was the closest the Rays got as the Yankees put up a four-run eighth inning, courtesy of a three-run home run for Gleyber Torres, which Yankees fans are certainly hoping to see more of, and Trevinos solo shot. Ian Hamilton then came in to close out the win.
Both of these teams were expected to do big things coming into this season. While the Yankees have been living up to expectations recently, the Rays have not. The Yankees look to bring this good momentum into their upcoming series against the Twins, as they look to catch up with the Baltimore Orioles, who are currently at the top of a very competitive American League East division. The battle for this division should be an interesting bout, and we’re all looking forward to witnessing it.
