Zion Williamson Will Join Slam Dunk Contest Next Season If He is an All-Star

NBA

New Orleans Pelicans young star Zion Williamson has let it be known that he is willing to join next year’s Slam Dunk Contest during the NBA’s All-Star Weekend if he is voted an all-star. Williamson has dealt with numerous injuries during his first five seasons in the league, noticeably lower body injuries that include his foot, ankle, and knee. Back during his days at Duke, and even still to this day, Zion is considered a high flier because of his incredible bounce. We’ve seen G’Leaguer Mac McClung win the last two Slam Dunk Contest, and now it’s time we see some actual star power in the competition.

In 51 games played this season, Zion is averaging about 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, a steal, and a block in 31 minutes a night. His best game thus far was in a Valentine’s Day matchup against the Washington Wizards. Williamson put up 36 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and a block in a 133-126 victory. The Pelicans currently hold the fifth seed with a 37-25 record. They sit a game above the Phoenix Suns, two above the Sacramento Kings, and three games ahead of the Dallas Mavericks. New Orleans is four and a half games behind the fourth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers.

When asked if he could see himself in the Dunk Contest next season, Zion said, “I’ve got to do my part and make the All-Star Game. If I’m in the All-Star Game, I’ll do the dunk contest. If I’m not, I’m not doing it.” It’s understandable what Williamson is saying, but at the same time, the Dunk Contest needs star power, and he’s the perfect fit for it. If another star comes out and says they’ll do the Dunk Contest next season, would this change Zion’s mind? He has a chance to really make the NBA All-Star Weekend special once again.
