2019 NBA Champion Point Guard Agrees to Deal with the Philadelphia 76ers
18-year veteran point guard Kyle Lowry has played with five different teams over the span of his career. While the 2019 NBA champion point guard was an integral part of the eighth seeded Miami Heat, who made the NBA Finals back during the 2022-2023 season before falling short to the Denver Nuggets. Miami traded Lowry midway into the season to the Philadelphia 76ers, where they defeated the Heat in the Play-In Tournament to clinch the seventh seed. Philly would lose in seven games in the first round to the New York Heat. Lowry became a free agent at the end of the season, and today the 38-year-old agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The future 2019 NBA champion point guard started off his career with the Memphis Grizzlies as he was selected as the 24th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. Three seasons later, the Grizzlies would send Lowry to the Houston Rockets. Another three and a half seasons went by, and once again he was traded, this time to the Toronto Raptors. Over the years with his teammate DeMar Derozan, the Raptors would become a playoff team. From 2014-2018, Toronto was eliminated in the first round twice, the semifinals twice, and the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2016. Toronto eventually traded for Kawhi Leonard and with a new sidekick, Lowry became an NBA champion after the Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games. He stayed with the Raptors until the end of the 2020-2021 season, where in that offseason, Lowry agreed to a sign-and-trade to the Miami Heat. During his time as a member of the Heat, the 38-year-old point guard helped Miami to two Eastern Conference Finals appearances and an NBA Finals appearance. This past season, Lowry’s contract was bought out by the Heat on February 11th, he then signed with the 76ers.
Lowry played in 60 games with both the Heat and the 76ers this season. In 28 minutes a game, the 2019 NBA Champion point guard averaged eight points, three rebounds, four assists, and a steal. He appeared in just one of the Sixers playoff games against the Knicks, where he put up seven points, five rebounds, an assist, and two steals in 29 minutes. Philadelphia has a veteran presence now on the bench that could help this team out in extremely clutch situations.
