Six-Year Guard Re-Signs with the Suns
Josh Okogie will be staying with the Phoenix Suns on a new deal for two years, worth $16 million. Okogie has been a solid gadget player for the Suns the past few years as a determined defender and hustle player. Since joining the Suns, Okogie has played in over 80% of the games for the squad, but his diminishing offensive output hasn’t helped his case to get more minutes during those games. With his new extension, Okogie will look to prove that he is worthy of gaining more minutes on the court.
Okogie was drafted in the first round with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. As an undersized player at only six foot and four inches, Okogie has had to play hard to get solid minutes in the NBA. His hustle pays off on the offensive backboard with him averaging an offensive rebound and a steal per game throughout his career. However, his poor offensive scoring output has resulted in him losing minutes on the court.
When the Suns brought on Okogie, they hoped that his role as a rotational player would increase along with his scoring output but this hasn’t been the case. His minutes have continually declined since he was drafted and his scoring output is down to just five points a game this season. It isn’t too late for Okogie to turn his career around. However, he needs to start showing that he can be a capable scorer, especially in the modern NBA where offense is the primary focus of many teams.
