2020 Most Improved Player Agrees to Contract Extension with Toronto
Toronto Raptors newly acquired star, Brandon Ingram, agreed to a massive contract extension. The deal is a three year, $120 million which includes a player option in 2027-28. This deal puts Ingram right at $40 million per year. The news broke from ESPN Insider Shams Charania earlier today.
Brandon Ingram was traded from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Toronto Raptors on February 5th, just two days before the trade deadline. The deal was in exchange for Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk, a first-round pick and one-second round pick. Not a surprising move from the Pelicans, being that they are last in the Western Conference. The Raptors have similar struggles in the East, but this move proves the franchises bright expectations for the near future.
Ingram has been a versatile wing scorer in the league since he was drafted in 2016, second overall. The six-foot-eight forward has averaged 19.5 points in his career and was averaging 22.2 this season, although he’s missed a handful of games because of injury. When healthy, the young star has proven the hype he had coming into the league. Judging by the terms of the massive extension, Ingram has become the Raptors franchise player for the foreseeable future. He will play alongside rising stars including Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick and Immanuel Quickley. On paper, this young roster has the skill set teams dream to build around. Although they have been a disappointment this season record wise, fans have massive hope moving forward with this new, young core of players. They also are currently in the race to win the draft lottery. A draft that includes freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, who is regarded to be a next generational talent.
