2022 National League Home Run Leader Makes MLB History in Los Angeles
Last night after trailing 4-1 after the second inning, the Philadelphia Phillies came back to score eight unanswered runs to win 9-4. This victory largely came in part to the Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. The 2022 National League home run leader bashed three home runs in this win, one to left, one to center, and one to right field. He became the third player in MLB history to rip three home runs coming out of the leadoff spot. This was the first time the Phillies have obtained a series win since defeating the Dodgers at home at Citizens Bank Park from July 9th-11th.
On the season, Schwarber has played in 103 games. In 387 at-bats, the two-time all-star has put up 101 hits, five stolen bases, 27 home runs, and 73 RBIs with a .261 batting average. While it may be tough to surpass his 47 home runs from last season, he could get close to the 104 RBIs he had last season, if he continues to be a factor day in and day out for this Phillies franchise. Philadelphia is 68-46. They sit seven and a half games ahead of the Braves for first place in the National League East division. During the final two months of the season, the Phillies must produce, both while they’re on the road and at home.
There have been times this season when the Phillies look like the most dangerous team in all of baseball. At other times, the team has skidded to a losing streak. It will be interesting to see if Philadelphia can continue to stay on top within their division and head into the postseason fully confident they can head back to the World Series. Can Schwarber and the rest of the Phillies lead the franchise to another World Series championship?
