A Disappointing Season for Liverpool?

A club with so much promise this season hasn't quite delivered. Liverpool entered the 2024–25 campaign with hopes of completing the treble, backed by a deep squad and strong momentum. Though their success in the Premier League has been dominant and consistent, they've struggled when it mattered most in high-pressure tournament play. Exits from the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League have turned what could have been a great season into one that feels disappointing.

Liverpool looked to be in good form early in the FA Cup, cruising through the third round with confidence. However, everything unraveled in the fourth round when they faced Championship side Plymouth Argyle. What was expected to be a routine win turned into a nightmare. Plymouth played with high energy and discipline, while Liverpool looked sluggish and outmatched in spirit. Plymouth won 1-0 and shocked everyone. While Arne Slot did rotate some of his bench players into the starting lineup, there was no excuse for the lackluster performance. Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk were all left out of the squad. You can't take any opponent in football lightly, and Liverpool paid the price heavily on this one.

Liverpool’s Carabao Cup journey was equally frustrating. Despite a strong start and looking in good form throughout the competition, everything fell apart in the final. Facing Newcastle at Wembley, the team looked like they had lost all hope before the match even began. Just days earlier, they had suffered a heartbreaking exit from the Champions League, losing to PSG on penalties. Liverpool just couldn’t find their rhythm in this final. Passes were off, the intensity wasn’t there, and the form that had carried them through earlier rounds had completely vanished. While Newcastle played brilliant football and deserves credit, this was a game and a trophy Liverpool should have won.

If the FA Cup and Carabao Cup exits were frustrating, Liverpool’s Champions League elimination was downright devastating. Drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16, the game had all the makings of a thriller. The first leg, played at the Parc des Princes, saw Liverpool take a confident 1–0 lead, sparking hope that a deep European run was on the cards. Back at Anfield for the second leg, PSG found an equalizer to level the aggregate at 1–1, sending the match into extra time and eventually penalties. The shootout went poorly for Liverpool, and nerves got the best of them, and PSG capitalized. Several key players missed their penalties, and Liverpool was sent home.

As if the trophy disappointments weren’t enough, Liverpool now faces major uncertainty off the pitch. Three of the club’s most iconic figures, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, all have contracts set to expire soon. Trent Alexander-Arnold appears set to leave the club, with reports strongly linking him to a move to Real Madrid. Meanwhile, the futures of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk remain up in the air. Salah, still one of the Premier League's top scorers, continues to be linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Van Dijk, the heart of Liverpool's defense for years, is also nearing the end of his contract. Now 33 years old, it’s unclear whether the club will back him for another stretch or begin with new players.

With stars at every position, it's hard to believe Liverpool will end the season with only the Premier League title to show for it. For a squad loaded with world-class talent, this campaign should have delivered much more. Between poor coaching decisions, inconsistent form, and an overall lack of good form in key moments, it’s sadly no surprise the Reds fell short in every other competition. Liverpool will have to bounce back next season with better results, stronger performances, and the hunger to win again.
