After Having a Career Year, Jonnu Smith Signs with the Miami Dolphins

NFL

The Atlanta Falcons have let go of backup tight end Jonnu Smith having had his best season since he left the Tennessee Titans in 2020. He played a career-high 17 games this past season, catching the ball 50 times to go along with 582 yards, both also career highs. The Falcons loved his deep-threat ability as well as his skills in the open field. They have now put their full trust in Kyle Pitts as the superstar tight end on the field. Smith, now 28 years old, is looking for a permanent home for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The Miami Dolphins believe Smith will provide the proper offensive assistance as they have signed him to a two-year ten-million-dollar deal.

Jonnu Smith got the full college experience as he stayed all four years (2013-2016) at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. In 43 career games, he totaled 178 receptions for 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was then drafted in the third round of the 2017 draft by the Tennessee Titans. He has now played for a total of three NFL teams and is looking for a lengthy deal with another team.

Smith has been blessed in his career that he has not suffered a major injury. He has played in a minimum of 13 games in every season of his career. He has a unique ability that not every tight end has, the ability to make defenders miss in open space. Smith showcased this by having two catches over 40 yards this season, one going for a touchdown. His forty time equates to 4.62 seconds which is faster than the average time for a tight end at 4.7 seconds. His speed in the open field is his biggest asset and the Dolphins would be smart to design plays to get him open.
