Avalanche Complete Massive Comeback to Reclaim the Central Division
The Avalanche hosted the Penguins on Sunday afternoon, looking to extend their eight-game win streak. It was all Penguins to start the game, however, as they took a 2-0 in the first period. Pittsburgh didn’t stop there, scoring two more goals midway through the second period, increasing the lead to four goals. The Avalanche needed a quick spark down 4-0 with only 4:20 left in the second period.
Just 25 seconds after the fourth goal, Sean Walker got the Avalanche on the board. Yakov Trenin followed it up with the Avalanche’s second goal of the day right before the second period expired, giving Colorado life. To start off the final period, Jonathan Drouin narrowed the deficit to one goal, just three minutes and 32 seconds into the quarter. Now with a four-goal comeback becoming a real possibility, the Avalanche needed one more major play. It came from who else but Nathan MacKinnon, the current NHL MVP favorite, as he notched the fourth goal of the night with under 5 minutes remaining. The Avalanche were able to continue stellar defense and force overtime, looking to secure an incredible comeback.
Colorado made that come true just 54 seconds into overtime when Jonathan Drouin netted his second goal of the night for the win. In a miracle fashion, the Avalanche completed a four-goal comeback in a total of 25 minutes. With those three points, they put themselves back in first place in the Central Division and just one point behind the NHL lead. They now bring a nine-game win streak into a stretch of three more home games to finish out March, looking to continue strong with playoffs right around the corner.
