Trevor Bauer Pitches Against the Yankees in Mexico and Dominates

MLB

Nearly 20,000 fans walked into Estadio Alfredo Harp Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, Sunday afternoon to watch Trevor Bauer pitch against the New York Yankees. Bauer, a former all-star and Cy Young winner has been out of the MLB since 2021 due to a sexual assault case. He made 17 starts for the Dodgers in 2021 before the allegations came out. Bauer played in Japan in 2023 with the Yokohama Dena Baystars where he posted a 10-4 record with a 2.76 ERA in 19 starts. Bauer recently signed a six-game contract with Diablos Rojos of the Mexican League. After making a start against his former team, the Dodgers, two weeks ago, he faced off against the Yankees in Mexico. This matchup between Diablos Rojos and the Yankees is a historic one for the Mexican League and was highly anticipated after the news came out about Bauer starting the game.

Diablos Rojos took down the Yankees 4-3 on a hot, 80-degree day in Mexico City in large part to the efforts of Bauer. In three scoreless innings of work, Bauer struck out three, gave up four hits and walked two. He did this somewhat efficiently too, throwing 54 pitches. The biggest pitch he threw was to Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, throwing a nasty low and away slider for the strikeout, leaving the bases loaded in the second inning. He hit his well-renowned flex celebration and gave a quick look towards the Yankees dugout as he strutted back to his own. An old friend of the Yankees, 2009 World Series Champion Robinson Cano, got in on the action, going 3-4 with a home run and a double. Bauer has been routinely posting updates on his YouTube, Instagram, and X accounts. After the game, he shared his thoughts on X. “Lol,” he said. For someone who usually is very outspoken, these three letters sent more of a message than a thousand could have.

After both parties disputed the sexual assault case in October of 2023, Bauer has been lobbying hard for his return to the MLB. Bauer is seeking a league minimum contract, of $740,000. Bauer has also served his 194-game suspension, which was shortened from 324 games. MLB teams seem against signing him due to his past. Not only the case previously against him but for his well-known attitude problem. A prime example of this attitude was when he threw a ball over the centerfield wall after a poor start for the then-Cleveland Indians in 2019.  Do you think Bauer should get a second chance in the MLB?
