Beast of a Linebacker in 2023 Signs to the Vikings
After linebacker Jaelan Phillips went down with a season-ending Achilles injury, defensive end Andrew Van Ginkel stepped into Phillips’ place and performed marvelously. If you’ve seen on Hard Knocks, Van Ginkel explained why he must execute the team’s game plan on a weekly basis. Now, since he’s a free agent, the more explosive on-field plays during that contract year means more potential guaranteed money in Van Ginkel’s pocket. He was looking to continue playing for the Dolphins as that is not the case anymore. Andrew just signed a two-year deal worth up to 20 million dollars with 14 million guaranteed with the Vikings.
Van Ginkel first played college football at the University of South Dakota, but because head coach Joe Glenn retired, Andrew transferred to Iowa Western Community College. After spending a year there, the defensive end transferred once more to the University of Wisconsin. He was selected in the fifth round, 151st overall by the Miami Dolphins. For the past three seasons, Andrew Van Ginkel has played in all 17 games for the Dolphins, being a huge asset to the team, and providing the defense with his monstrous presence.
During the 2023 season, Van Ginkel played in all 17 games. He combined for 69 tackles, 42 solo tackles, with 27 assisted tackles. Andrew also recorded eight defended passes, eight tackles for losses, six sacks, and an interception. His best game of the season had to be on Christmas Eve during a 22-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Van Ginkel had ten tackles, one and a half sacks, and a tackle for a loss of yardage. That may have been his best performance, but he’ll certainly remember the Dolphins 45-15 win over the Washington Commanders. During that game, Andrew Van Ginkel caught his second career interception, running it back 33 yards for a Miami touchdown. At 28 years old, he hopes to push this Vikings team to the next level.
