Blue Jays Snap Seven-Game Losing Streak
This year's American League East Division is one of the most stacked I can remember. The powerhouses of the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox as of recent, have made this division extremely competitive. There are almost as many teams above .500 in the division as there are in the whole National League. Sitting at the bottom of this hardcore division is the Toronto Blue Jays. While they’ve shown flashes of potential in past years, and actually have a decent roster on paper, the Blue Jays have been struggling tremendously this year, and I think it’s fair to say that it’s been quite disappointing.
Toronto currently has a record of 36-43. Their struggles this year have been the result of many things. They are often matched up against good teams, but that definitely isn’t an excuse for their historically bad offensive start. Through their first 32 games, they averaged their lowest runs per game since 1981. They did, however, snap a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday night, taking down the Red Sox by a score of 9-4. The offense was carried by Vladimir Gurrero Jr., who hit two doubles, driving in four RBIs, and George Springer, who hit a monster two-run blast. This was the highest-scoring game for the Jays since a 14-11 loss on May 26th against the Detroit Tigers, which describes their lack of offense. You don’t have to score 10 runs a game, but their lack of offensive production has been arguably the center cause of their struggle. Their pitching hasn’t been great this year, either, but they did get a decent outing from Kevin Gausman, who went six innings, allowing three earned runs.
To turn their season around, the Blue Jays would have to start hitting. Tuesday night was certainly a start, but it’ll take a lot more of this. Anything is possible, but in a division like this, the playoffs are definitely a long shot. I’m not here to make any negative comments, it’s just unlikely. I’d certainly be all in for it, and it would make the competitive AL East division even more exciting.
