Chiefs' Frustration Mounts as They Lose to Bills

NFL

If you turned on your television Sunday afternoon, there is a good chance you were turning it on to watch this game. In a highly anticipated matchup, the Buffalo Bills faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Bills have not been playing the best football as of late, they showcased in this game that they are still very much a team that is in the hunt for the playoffs as they beat Kansas City 20-17 on the road. The Bills may have won this one, but they will have a very rough game next week as they will head back home to Buffalo to take on the Dallas Cowboys and MVP candidate quarterback Dak Prescott. The Chiefs will hope to and almost certainly get a win as they head to take on the New England Patriots, who have just been eliminated from playoff contention, next week in Foxborough. Let’s take a look at how Buffalo got this win.

The Chiefs didn’t start this one out too hot as their quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception, a pass intended for running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, into the hands of Bills defensive end AJ Epenesa. However, the first points of the game were not scored until a few drives later in the first quarter as Bills quarter Josh Allen connected with running back James Cook for a 25-yard touchdown, and after kicker Tyler Bass made the extra point, the score of the game was 7-0 Buffalo. The Bills would score again on their next drive early in the second quarter as Allen ran in the endzone for a 6-yard touchdown to make the score of the game 14-0. The Bills' offense would make their first mistake of the game on their next drive as Allen threw an interception, a pass intended for Buffalo wide receiver Trent Sherfield, into the hands of Kansas City safety Chamarri Conner. Kansas City’s offense would be able to capitalize off of this great play by their defense as running back Jerick McKinnon ran in the endzone for a 7-yard touchdown and after kicker Harrison Butker made the extra points, the Chiefs would head into the locker room only down a touchdown.

The Bills offense would be able to set up a 31-yard field goal for Tyler Bass on their first drive of the second half. After Bass knocked it down the score of the game was 17-7. However, Buffalo would not have a ten-point lead long as Mahomes found wide receiver Rashee Rice open in the back of the endzone for a four-yard touchdown to make the score of the game 17-14 with three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. Rice would not have such a memorable drive the next time the Chiefs got the ball as he would fumble. The fumble was forced by Bills cornerback Christian Benford and recovered by Buffalo cornerback Taron Johnson. Fortunately for the Chiefs, the Bills could not capitalize off of this turnover on the offensive end and the next points of the game would be scored by Kansas City as Butker knocked down a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth to make the score of the game tied at 17 a piece. However, the Bills would have the last laugh in this one as Bass knocked down a 39-yard field goal to put the Bills up 20-17 with less than two minutes left in this game. The Chiefs were clearly frustrated at the end of this one as they lost to a recently mediocre Bills team everyone knows they could’ve and should’ve beaten.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen went twenty-three for forty-two on his passes in the game, throwing for 233 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Allen also had the Bill's only rushing touchdown in the game. His prime receiving target in this game was running back James Cook who had one touchdown and five receptions for 83 yards in the game. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed twenty-five of his forty-three passes in the game, finishing having thrown for 271 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Running back Jerick McKinnon had the Chiefs only rushing touchdown in the game. Tight end Travis Kelce led Kansas City in receiving yards on Sunday afternoon with six receptions for 83 yards, but wide receiver Rashee Rice had the Chiefs only receiving touchdown in the game.
