Cole Kmet’s Potential for a Breakout Season Under Ben Johnson

NFL

The 2024 season was one Bears fans would rather forget, as Chicago stumbled to a 5-12 finish. Despite high expectations, the season quickly derailed, leaving many players with disappointing stat lines. Among them was tight end Cole Kmet, who finished the year with 47 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns. Now, with a new coaching staff and a fresh offensive approach under Ben Johnson, Kmet could finally reach the ceiling that many have long believed he’s capable of.

Kmet’s skill set has always suggested more potential than his production has shown, and the hiring of Johnson presents an opportunity to maximize his impact. In Detroit, Johnson turned rookie tight end Sam LaPorta into one of the league’s most dynamic offensive weapons. Kmet, who possesses similar versatility and size, could see a dramatic uptick in usage in Johnson’s 12-personnel-heavy system. With the Bears also signing veteran tight end Durham Smythe, Johnson now has the pieces to create an offense that fully utilizes the tight end position.

The Bears have made significant improvements to their offensive line, acquiring Jonah Jackson, Joe Thuney, and Drew Dalman, which should allow for a more stable passing game. A stronger offensive front means Caleb Williams will have more time in the pocket, creating better opportunities for Kmet to become a reliable option in the middle of the field. Additionally, with Keenan Allen is likely departing in free agency; Kmet could see an increased target share alongside DJ Moore and Rome Odunze.

If Johnson’s track record is any indication, Kmet could be in line for a breakout year similar to LaPorta’s in Detroit. His ability to operate as a three-level receiving threat, combined with Johnson’s creative play-calling, could make him one of the most dangerous tight ends in the NFL. Kmet has been underrated for years and will be given a chance to display true dominance. With the right system in place, 2025 could finally be the year Kmet cements himself as a premier offensive weapon for the Bears.
