Defensive Pro Bowler Signs with the Colts

NFL

Following the 2024-25 season, where the San Francisco 49ers had an unfortunate record of 6-11, they still had to address their potential losses in free agency. Charvarius Ward went into free agency after spending his previous three seasons with the 49ers. Ward, who is now 29, has become one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks. He can execute the man-coverage ability to press or pedal off the ball, along with the backfield vision to make plays in zone coverage. With his skill, Ward has decided to find a home in Indianapolis as he has signed a three-year deal worth up to $60 million with the Colts.

Ward began his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent but was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs shortly after training camp in 2018. He quickly made an impression, starting 16 games in his first full season and contributing to the Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV victory in 2019. Over his four seasons with the Chiefs, Ward consistently demonstrated his coverage skills and became a key player in their secondary. In his four years with the Chiefs, he recorded 211 tackles and four interceptions. Then in 2022, Ward signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers. His performance with the 49ers has been impressive, earning him a Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors in 2023. Ward recorded a total of 185 tackles and six interceptions in his time in San Francisco. Five of Ward’s interceptions came in the 2023 season. Ward's ability to shut down opposing receivers has made him one of the top cornerbacks in the league.

As Ward entered free agency in 2025, several teams were vying for his services. His market value is projected to be around $15.3 million annually, and teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and New York Giants were potential landing spots. Charvarius Ward's journey from an undrafted free agent to a top-tier NFL cornerback is a testament to his perseverance and talent. His future in the league remains bright,  and he plans to continue to be a key player for the Colts this upcoming season.
