Diamondbacks Pull Off Huge Win in the 10th

MLB

Just before the MLB all-star break, the Arizona Diamondbacks were in fourth place in the National League West division. They’re currently 61-52 and sit four and a half games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers from first place. Last night, the D-Backs pulled off a huge 7-6 win at the top of the tenth inning against the Cleveland Guardians. Back near the beginning of the season, Arizona took a walk-off win against the Chicago Cubs. The D-Backs will have two more games against the Guardians before Arizona starts a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

At the top of the first inning, Diamondbacks designated hitter Ketel Marte blasted a solo shot to left-center field. Just one batter later, catcher Gabriel Moreno belted a solo home run to left field. During the bottom of the first inning, Guardians third baseman José Ramírez looped an RBI double to right-center field. One batter later, first baseman Josh Naylor hit an RBI groundout to tie the game up at two. Cleveland took the lead during the bottom of the second when catcher Bo Naylor lined an RBI single to center field. The D-Backs tied the game up at the top of the sixth when third baseman Eugenio Suárez thrashed an RBI double down the left field line. Arizona took the lead when shortstop Geraldo Perdomo hit an RBI forceout.

The game was flipped a half inning later when Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez hit a two-run single to give Cleveland a 5-4 lead. At the top of the eighth, Diamondbacks pinch hitter Joc Pederson smashed his 18th home run of the season to right field. With one out and a runner on third during the bottom of the ninth, Cleveland’s pinch hitter Daniel Schneemann hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at six, which made the game head to extra innings. At the top of the tenth, Suárez hit a sacrifice fly to give Arizona the lead. Cleveland could not come back to tie the game up or walk it off, giving the Diamondbacks a 7-6 victory.

Arizona’s starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitched seven innings allowing five runs on eight hits, and two walks while striking out four batters. Moreno and Josh Bell were the only players to record multiple hits for the D-Backs. Guardians starting pitcher Logan Allen pitched five innings allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters. Andrés Giménez went three for four in the loss.
