Former MLB Saves Leader Signs with Los Angeles Dodgers

MLB

Veteran Closer Kirby Yates has agreed to a tentative agreement to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Being one of the top relievers available this offseason, the Dodgers did well to add Yates to their bullpen. This acquisition will better prepare them to close out close games next season.

Apart from Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates was looked at as one of the more coveted bullpen arms available this offseason. After posting a 1.17 earned run average, a 7-2 record, 33 saves, and an All-Star appearance, it is clear to see why. In his age 37 season, Yates posted a career-high in Wins Above Replacement, with 3.3. His stellar pitching throughout the year led to an eighth-place finish in American League Cy Young award voting as well. While Yates had a rough stretch due to poor performances and injuries from 2020-2022, he has certainly gotten back on track in his last two seasons. Yates thrived as a setup man in 2023 with the Braves but certainly proved himself once again last year as a strong closer, earning the job for the Rangers after José Leclerc was demoted from the role. This breakout came five seasons after leading the league in saves with 41 for the San Diego Padres in 2019.

With Yates in great form once again, his acquisition will prove to be very impactful to both the Dodgers and the rest of free agency. Considering the age of Yates, this is a signing that will not lock up long-term money for Los Angeles due to a shorter deal. Assuming Yates stays healthy, this move will certainly address the Dodgers’ need for bullpen help in hopes of making a deep run in 2025. Now that Yates has signed, expect names like David Robertson, Paul Sewald, Andrew Chafin, and Kendall Graveman to attract more interest from teams looking to bolster their bullpen.
