This Hornets Big Man Is Flourishing
Just over one week ago, the Charlotte Hornets traded their backup center, Nick Richards, to the Phoenix Suns. Since then, Hornets big man Mark Williams has been the greatest beneficiary of an increased role as he has seen a large increase in both minutes and production. His great play has also led the Hornets to their longest win streak of the season, having won three out of four games since trading Richards for Suns forward Josh Okogie. While there had been many doubts about Williams’ progression since being drafted in 2022, his recent form proves that he can be a valuable piece to the Hornets' young core.
In Williams' last four games, he has averaged 32.9 minutes per game. This is nearly a ten-minute increase from his season average of 23.4 minutes per game. Williams is certainly making the most of his extra playing time, averaging 25.3 points, 13.5 rebounds, and three assists in his last four games. Considering his season averages of 15.7 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game, Williams is flourishing, having been given a larger role within the team. Part of the reason for Williams’ success has been his ability to get to the free throw line. Williams’ 7.25 free throw attempts per game are much higher than his regular season average of 4.3. Although a four-game sample size is quite small, it is clear to see Williams’ potential and his impact on winning. Although Williams’ stats may drop off a bit, he is poised to become one of the next double-double machines in the NBA.
With a record of 11-29 through 40 games, the Hornets needed a catalyst to change the outlook of their season. While Okogie has not provided much for the team since being traded, the Hornets have simply benefited from the opportunity to play Mark Williams more often. Despite wins in four of their last six games, the team has quite a long way to go as they trail the Chicago Bulls by eight games for the final Eastern Conference Play-In spot. Even though a playoff appearance is unlikely for the team, there is still plenty of time left for the Hornets to improve before the end of the season, having 42 games remaining. Regardless of how the team performs to end the year, the front office will be both relieved and excited to see Mark Williams playing at such a high level. Although the Hornets may be far from Eastern Conference contenders now, a team led by young stars like LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Mark Williams may be a formidable opponent one day if surrounded by the right pieces.
