Germany: The Standout Team in the Euros So Far

Since the start of the Euros, it has come as no surprise that Germany would start strong, evidenced by their 5-1 victory over Scotland. This performance was not just a routine win; it was a statement by the German side. Hosting the Euros in Germany has given the players an extra boost, motivating them to perform at their highest level, not just for their country but for their own pride as well. This German team has a distinct aura that suggests they have a genuine shot at winning the trophy. Despite being grouped out in the 2022 World Cup, a disappointing result given their grand expectations, the team has rebounded under the leadership of Nagelsmann, who took over in September. Initially, they drew with Mexico and lost to Turkey and Austria, leaving the public unconvinced. However, subsequent victories over France and the Netherlands have fueled their confidence. This newfound belief is evident in their free-flowing football, making them a formidable contender in the tournament.

One of the main factors driving this team is German midfielder Toni Kroos, who came out of national team retirement for one last shot at an international trophy. Kroos is no stranger to dominating international tournaments, having won the World Cup in 2014 with a stellar German side. He was also one of the standout players in that team, narrowly missing the Player of the Tournament to Argentine great Lionel Messi. In their tournament opener against Scotland, Kroos was unplayable at times, commanding the midfield with ease. Supporting him are rising stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, who played down the wings and contributed significantly to the midfield play. Both Wirtz and Musiala scored for Germany in the game, boosting their confidence for the rest of the tournament. These two players complement each other in many ways. Musiala excels in navigating tight spaces and advancing the ball up the pitch, while Wirtz is a clinical midfielder who becomes a serious threat once he has the ball at the edge of the box. Together, they create scoring opportunities out of nothing, displaying their exceptional talent in the beautiful game.

Two underrated players crucial to Germany's success are Kai Havertz and Ilkay Gündogan. Despite the spotlight on Wirtz and Musiala, Havertz and Gündogan are equally vital to the team. Havertz demonstrated his value by scoring a goal and assisting in the match against Scotland, proving that playing him as a number 9 benefits the German side. Coach Nagelsmann experimented with Havertz at left-back in friendlies but now knows he has found his needed striker for the tournament. Gündogan, well-known for his stellar career at Manchester City and winning the Treble, may not have had the best season at Barcelona, but his talent remains undeniable. Germany's defense is also solid, with players like Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rüdiger. They would have kept a clean sheet against Scotland if not for a late mistake by Rüdiger, but such errors will be addressed in the next game. Germany now sets their sights on Hungary, who recently lost 1-3 to Switzerland.
