Giants Capture 5th Win During MNF Against the Packers

NFL

We got to see two interesting matchups shape up during this week’s Monday Night Football. The Green Bay Packers desperately needed a win to keep them hanging in the NFC playoff hunt, while a New York Giants team that hasn't had the best of luck all season, needed to go out on their home field and show they have a lot more to offer. New York went back and forth with Green Bay in this matchup, but ultimately pulled out a 24-22 win, marking their fifth win of the year. Let’s check out how the New York Giants were able to pull through on Monday Night Football.

The first score of this game occurred with one minute left in the first quarter. After the New York Giants missed a field goal attempt from 48 yards out, the Green Bay Packers marched down the field. Packers running back Jayden Reed ran 16 yards to score the first touchdown of the night. Anders Carlson would knock down the extra-point attempt for Green Bay. On the next possession, New York did their job, tying this ballgame up at seven apiece. Giants running back Saquon Barkley ran five yards into the end zone for the touchdown, and Randy Bullock chipped in the extra-point attempt to tie this Monday Night Football matchup up. With 17 seconds left in the first half, Carlson hit a 36-yard field goal to give the Packers a 10-7 lead at the half.

New York started off with the football during the second half. Although the Giants went to punt the ball after their possession of the third quarter, the Packers would fumble the return, allowing New York to score, and take the lead. This is exactly what happened, as in just one minute, the Giants scored on another Barkley rushing touchdown. With Bullock’s extra point good, this gave the Giants a 14-10 lead with less than 11 minutes in the game. Less than four minutes later, Carlson ripped a 32-yard field goal to make it a one-point deficit for Green Bay. Before the end of the third quarter, Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito threw an eight-yard touchdown to receiver Isaiah Hodgins. With Bullock’s extra point going through, New York now had an eight-point lead. With five and a half minutes left in the game, Carlson hit a 48-yard field goal cutting the Giants lead to five.

After the Packers' field goal, on their next possession the Giants would fumble the ball, Green Bay cornerback Carrington Valentine ran 50 yards, getting tackled at the Giants' 36-yard line. This set up Green Bay finally taking the lead back, as Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Malik Heath. Green Bay would go for a two-point conversion but failed making it a 22-21 Packers ballgame. Even with a minute and a half left on the clock, there was no pressure on Tommy DeVito’s mind. His biggest play of that final possession of the game was a 32-yard pass to Wan'Dale Robinson. With Saquon Barkley edging the Giants closer to field goal range, Randy Bullock sealed a “giant” win for New York after nailing a 37-yard field goal, making it a close and interesting 24-22 victory for the Giants.

Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito went 17 for 21 with 158 passing yards and a touchdown. DeVito also rushed the ball ten times for 71 yards. Saquon Barkley had 20 rushes for 86 yards and two rushing touchdowns in the Giants win. Wan'Dale Robinson had six receptions for 79 yards. Robinson also had two rushes for 36 yards. Packers quarterback Jordan Love went 25 for 39 hurling 218 passing yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Packers running back AJ Dillon ran the ball 15 times for 53 yards. Green Bay’s tight end Tucker Kraft had four catches for 64 yards. After the win, the Giants moved to 5-8, while the Packers dropped to 6-7. Next week, the Giants will take on the Saints in New Orleans, and the Packers will go back home to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
