Giants Obtain Walk-Off Victory in Honor of Willie Mays
A week ago on June 18th, San Francisco Giants Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away at the age of 93. Since his passing, many fans have encouraged the MLB to change their logo to commemorate Mays. The Giants have struggled this season in a brutally tough National League West division with a 36-42 record. However, last night the team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a huge walk-off 5-4 victory against the Chicago Cubs. With the win, San Francisco is now 11 and a half games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. Hopefully, this clutch walk-off win allows this Giants team to turn the tides of their season around.
We would not see any scoring action until the top of the fourth inning when Cubs first baseman Michael Busch hit an RBI infield single to give Chicago the first run of the game. In the next inning, Cubs designated hitter Cody Bellinger lined an RBI single to right field. Three batters later, left fielder Ian Happ gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead by hitting an RBI groundout. The next batter, shortstop Dansby Swanson mashed an RBI double to left field. During the bottom of the fifth inning, Giants third baseman Matt Chapman crushed his ninth home run of the season to left field. An inning later, Giants shortstop Nick Ahmed nailed his first home run of the season to left field.
San Francisco now was headed into the ninth inning with a 4-2 deficit. Both pinch hitter Michael Conforto and right fielder Austin Slater hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four. With two outs and the bases loaded, it was all up to Giants first baseman Wilmer Flores. San Francisco’s first baseman had a 3-1 count and would watch the next pitch go by as a ball. This sent a runner home and gave the Giants the literal walk-off 5-4 win. With this win honoring Mays, perhaps this Giants team can turn the tides of their season around.
