Jets Part Ways with Head Coach Robert Saleh
The New York Jets have decided to move on from their current head coach, Robert Saleh. The Jets have started their 2024 season, with a record 2-3. This comes after a loss to Sam Darnold and the Minnesota Vikings in London this past weekend. This is only the second time that Jets owner Woody Johnson has ever fired a head coach in the middle of the season. He gave Saleh an ultimatum at the end of the last season after having a 7-10 finish to make the steaks higher, but that still didn’t work out for him.
Saleh has been the head coach since the 2021 season. He was with the San Francisco 49ers as the defensive coach. He had a 20-36 record as the team's head coach. He also had six different quarterbacks start during his time with the Jets. After the team signed Aaron Rodgers last season, it seemed pretty promising for him. However, he went out with a torn Achilles for the 2023 season. Despite Rodgers playing, it still didn’t make a difference for this head coach.
The Jets were expected to be Super Bowl contenders this season with the return of Rodgers and other key players. However, things have not worked out as planned through the first five weeks of the season. The plus is that the Jets have overcome being the worst team in the league with their two wins over the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots. The season is not yet lost, but it will be if things keep going the way that they do.
Saleh had one year left on his contract from 2021. He had a great defense but terrible quarterback play and play calls for them. For right now, while the Jets try to figure out who exactly they are, they will have Jeff Ulbrich step in as their interim head coach. Hopefully, the Jets will begin to play better on both sides if Ulbrich can make a difference. The Jets have not had a great season since the 2015 season. Things should be looking up from here. They have a great defensive line, hopefully, things will turn around offensively too. This weekend they will take on the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
