Keselowski Reflects on Past on Podcast

We hear stories all the time about athletes that could have been the greatest if they hadn’t lost focus. Whether it be the women, status, drugs, lack of privacy, or whatever else may have been too much to handle for athletes in the past. The ability to keep the grit and determination for your goals with so much thrown in your face is something that’s easier said than done. While being a NASCAR driver might not seem as high status as certain other professions, superstar racer Brad Keselowski recently revealed, on Kevin Harvick’s FOX Sports Podcast, that he had no choice but to maintain a clear focus early in his career, even if that meant no extra fun at all.

It’s said that as he was growing up, Keselowski wasn’t much of a partier. Driving was apparently all he really focused on, as he paved his pathway to NASCAR. Alcohol was something he only learned of when he first got to the big leagues. "I grew up in a household that didn’t drink. It wasn’t like a super religious thing, but my parents just didn’t drink. There was no alcohol in the house growing up that I remember. I just never really had an interest in it,” Keselowski said. Apparently, his will to solely focus on racing was due to his dad’s influence, but not in a negative, threatening way.

"So, there was no drinking, there was no dating, there was none of those things because I wanted to race and my dad was very clear like ‘If you even touch any of that stuff, done.’ I don’t think he meant it in a mean way, it was probably actually really good for me. If you’re going to do this, you’re going to be 100% focused, we’re not doing anything at all. I’m not wasting my time with this,” Keselowski said. As many who are extremely focused on a goal, it can be hard to maintain focus and determination when distractions come up, and it seems that his dad just wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. Personally, I think there are some very good lessons to be learned from this. If you want anything in life, staying focused and knowing that your hard work and sacrifice will all be worth it, in the end, is the most key thought one can have when going after their goals.
