Luke Kornet Re-Signs with the Celtics After Winning the NBA Finals

NBA

Following his championship run with the Boston Celtics, Luke Kornet has resigned with the Celtics on a one-year contract. Kornet played as a great rotational piece as part of the stacked Celtics roster this season, especially filling in when Kristaps Porziņģis got injured in these past playoffs. Despite Kornet being the third-best center on the team, he was certainly a valuable asset at seven-foot-one-inches tall at blocking shots and getting key rebounds both on the offensive and defensive ends this season. The Celtics will be able to continue relying on Kornet’s ability to step up when needed with his resigning in free agency.

The Vanderbilt product has been a journeyman since going undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft. He would eventually join the Knicks to begin his NBA career. After being bounced around between the G League and the NBA for several years he eventually found a home on the Celtics for the past few years. Despite his lack of minutes at times during the past few seasons with the Celtics, Kornet has shown he can make an impact even when surrounded with serious talent.

This past season Kornet had career highs in several categories including field goal and free throw percentage at a staggering 70% and 91% respectively. Additionally, he pulled down on average two offensive rebounds a game giving extra possessions to the explosive Celtics offense. Kornet’s highly efficient shooting and impactful rebounding have led to a dramatic increase in minutes the past few years with the Celtics from seven minutes in 2021, 12 minutes in 2022, up to 16 minutes a game this past regular season. Look for Kornet to continue developing his game as he starts to blossom into a modern NBA Center who can defend on the perimeter and also shoot the ball with high efficiency.
