Mets Come Out on Top 6-5 in Thriller Versus Phillies

MLB

The New York Mets haven’t given us much to be excited about this year, but they did split with the Philadelphia Phillies in the long-awaited London Series that took place over the weekend. They won a thriller on Sunday that secured their 28th win of the season. They recently completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, so to split, even if it was only a two-game series, with arguably the best team in baseball is something that will definitely boost the team morale. The game was pretty normal until the end; that’s when things got interesting.

Going into the eighth, the Mets were down 4-3. In the eighth, Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado came in, and his wild pitching helped the Mets earn three more runs. He blew his second save in the past 13 chances he’s had and has a record on the season of 1-3. The inning included an RBI single from Mark Vientos and an RBI hit by pitch from Pete Alonso. A passed ball scored another run, and not much usually gets by J.T Realmuto, so that really emphasizes how wild the pitching was. The Phillies got one back off of a walk from Alec Bohm with the bases loaded, and then the game had a pretty thrilling ending when Nick Castellanos barely tipped a weak ground ball in front of home plate. Mets catcher Luis Torrens grabbed the ball, stepped on home, and threw the ball to first, for a very rare double play to end the game. The game also included RBIs from Brandon Nimmo who had one and JD Martinez recorded two. Reed Garrett picked up the win for the Mets.

The London Series was definitely an entertaining one, as the Mets earned a split that not many thought they would earn. If they can go on a run, I think .500 is possible for them. The 1-3 double play was a great way to cap off the series and game. Overall, I look forward to the MLB’s next London Series, and we’ll see what the future holds for both of these teams.
