Mets vs. Blue Jays Series Preview
After ending their nine-game win streak with a three-to-one loss in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets look to move forward and head on the road to face the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets have been one of the more exciting teams to watch as they hope to turn their season around after heartbreaking losses against Wild-Card foes in back-to-back series. The Blue Jays are coming off a mere series win against the Braves, but unfortunately hopes were taken from them as they lost the series finale in extra innings due to a walk-off by Sean Murphy. They did however take Game Two of the series, which allowed the Mets to sneak into a playoff position. Here are the projected starters and takeaways from this upcoming series.
Game One features former Met Chris Bassitt on the bump for the Blue Jays. The Mets will throw Tylor Megill tonight Monday, September 9th after Paul Blackburn’s expected return from the injured list is halted. Megill has been shaky as a starter for the Mets, pitching just four innings in his last start with three earned runs against him. Game Two is when Blackburn is expected to return as he’ll face Bowden Francis for the Blue Jays. The series finale will have the Mets throwing Sean Manaea against Kevin Gausman for Toronto. Gausman has turned it around since June and looks to keep it going against the Mets ace.
The Mets currently are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the third Wild-Card spot while also sitting one and a half back of the Diamondbacks for the second spot and two games back of the Padres for the top Wild-Card spot. This series can help the Mets lunge into playoff position with an expected series sweep. The Blue Jays are still not officially eliminated from playoff contention but will need a lot of help, sitting eight and a half games back of the third and final Wild-Card spot in the American League. The Mets after the Blue Jays will open up a three-game road trip against the Philadelphia Phillies, who they trail by just seven games in the final 19 games of the season. The Blue Jays will host the St. Louis Cardinals after the Mets’ departure.
