Pass Rusher’s Future with the Giants Still Remains Unsure

NFL

Getting rid of Kayvon Thibodeaux would be one of the worst ideas the Giants have ever had. He hasn’t entirely lived up to being the first-round pick the Giants grabbed in the several years. However, he has still been a significant asset to the team in their times of trouble. However, adding veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to the 2025 season roster, the Giants must decide who needs to stay and who will be traded. Currently, there is a strong possibility that they are looking to trade this current pass rusher away.

Thibodeaux was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft right out of Oregon. He had a slow start in his first couple of seasons, but last year he began to show his true potential. He recorded a 72.0 PFF pass-rushing grade, showing he can compete at this level. He also had a breakout of 11.5 sacks during the last season. He worked with Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence to try to stop their opposing teams from getting by.

This upcoming draft may be the reason things really get shaken up, and he may not be a Giant anymore. If the Giants decide to draft Penn State’s defensive end Abdul Carter with the third overall pick in this year's draft, they may let Thibodeaux go. If this is the case, then New York may as well start over and not go to the playoffs this year because they will not have a playoff-contending team, and that is honestly where this pass rusher belongs at this point. They want a playoff-contending team, and this is how they need to go about it. They must stop getting great players like these and just letting them go.

If the Giants decide not to keep him on and go for the fifth-year option, other areas may open for him. The Lions may contact the Giants and set up a trade for Thibodeaux. Since Aidan Hutchinson has been out with a significant leg injury since last season, they may not rely on the draft to replace him and may just go with this veteran player. It’s not the worst thing ever, but the Giants need to look at what they have before they start making wild decisions about getting rid of their veteran players. It’s not the smartest thing to do, but Thibodeaux plays decently and needs to go where one team will appreciate how he operates on the field.
