Potential Cut Candidates for the Dallas Cowboys
As the Dallas Cowboys head into this year's offseason, they have many questions, one being concerns over the amount of cap space available. After last year’s “All In “remarks from Jerry and Stephen Jones that were taken out of context, this year those two will look to be “selectively aggressive.”. The front office has made moves to help themselves, like restructuring the contracts of star players Dak Prescott and Ceedee Lamb. Restructuring contracts is not the only way they could gain cap space, however, the Cowboys could gain even more space now and in the future by cutting these potential candidates.
Trevon Diggs
Trevon Diggs is arguably the most controversial of the players available to cut, but he has gained some traction this offseason. The star corner for Dallas has had major injury concerns these past two seasons, playing in only 13 games over that time. Diggs’ ball-hawking skills are unquestionable, but his injuries have begun to raise concerns about whether they would affect his play. The rise of DaRon Bland has made this decision tough for the Cowboys, along with young corner Caelen Carson, who both are looked upon highly in Dallas. His cut would also save Dallas 9.6 million dollars if it were to happen post-June 1st.
Terrance Steele
Terrance Steele is another player on the potential cut list for the Cowboys. The Cowboys’ right tackle has not looked his best these last two seasons since his season was cut short due to injury heading into the 2022 NFL Playoffs. His contract does bring difficulties for Dallas; with four years left, he will cost the Cowboys next season $18.6 million, and a cut will only bring dead cap space. With young offensive linemen already in the room and poor play recently, Dallas might consider the dead cap worth it.
Malik Hooker
Malik Hooker is probably the most underlooked player to cut, but it is not because of money. Hooker, an integral piece for the Dallas secondary these last two seasons, has been getting older, and younger talent for the Cowboys has begun to start emerging. Juanyeh Thomas and Markquese Bell, who recently signed a three-year, $12 million extension, have started to become more frequent players. Hooker, 28, will save Dallas $5,750,000 in cap space if he is cut post-June 1st.
