Power-Hitting Shortstop Signs Deal with Giants

MLB

Power-hitting shortstop Willy Adames has signed his first-ever free-agent deal with the San Francisco Giants. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal is for seven years and is worth $182 million. This will be Adames’ third team since coming into the league in 2018. The Brewers had discussed trading Adames for the past two years but could not get a deal done. During the 2024 season, they discussed a contract extension as well, but nothing came of that. The Brewers were not able to offer a competitive enough deal and now deal with the consequences. The Giants have been without an upper-tier shortstop and hope that Adames can fill that void.

Adames has been considered one of the better shortstops in the league the last couple of years. Although he has no accolades to back it up, he is still considered one of the better options to play the position. In a position like shortstop, there are elite players who are considered some of the best to ever do it. In that mix, a guy like Adames, who doesn’t put up super fancy numbers, doesn’t get as much media attention.

Since being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, Adames has been a key piece in that lineup. He is a power-hitting shortstop who, for most of his career, has been very consistent with the glove. The biggest plus to getting Adames is you know he is going to be on the field every day. In his seven-year career, there have only been two years where he didn’t play under 139 games, those being his rookie year and the 2020 season.

With Adames, the Giants are getting a guy they can count on every day of the season. Adames is going to stay healthy and is going to be consistent. He is going to put up around 30 home runs with close to 100 RBI. He is going to strike out, and he is going to make errors now and then, but you know upfront what you are getting. He has yet to put up a season in his career that is really out of the ordinary for his standards. After coming off one of the better years of his career, the Giants will be very happy with the middle infield in 2025.
