Red Sox First Baseman Triston Casas Out Indefinitely with a Rib Injury

MLB

First Baseman for the Boston Red Sox, Triston Casas, will be out for an extended period of time after MRI scans come back pertaining to his ribcage. Last weekend, Casas looked uncomfortable at the plate when he took a swing against the Pittsburgh Pirates and felt an awkward motion in his side. In being placed first off on the 10-Day Injured List, the cause for concern would be the severity of the injury. After the MRI, Alex Cora then took it to the podium that his young star First Baseman would need a long period of time to heal. It is confirmed a fractured rib for Casas, where he will now spend the majority of the year on the IL.

In what was supposed to be a breakout year for Casas, it will see a major delay with the rib cage injury. While having a slow start to the campaign as a rookie last season, Casas picked up the pace in the latter half of the schedule, getting hot for the Red Sox and providing a slugging spark when runs were hard to come by. Starting off 2024 with six home runs, ten RBIs, and batting .244, Casas was off to a hot start where he could potentially see himself grow throughout the season with the effort put in during the offseason, and his now mature eye at the plate.

What this means for the Red Sox is another injury to the roster. Bobby Dalbec will now serve as the primary option at First base for the time being. As Lucas Giolito, Trevor Story, and Nick Pivetta are still injured for the Red Sox, Casas now unfortunately joins that crew. Injuries have been one of the Red Sox's biggest issues over the years, and the luck has not been any better for the team. With Outfielder Tyler O'Neill just getting reactivated off the 7-Day Injured List, that is a positive sign for Boston following that tough accident with Third Baseman Rafael Devers. Even with the massive amount of injuries to the team, Alex Cora and his staff does a great job providing new lineups day in and out. Standing at third in the highly competitive AL East at 13-10, they are two and a half games out from the leading New York Yankees early in the season. The Boston Red Sox will play one of the AL’s best in Cleveland tonight, where they will have a three-game stand with the Guardians. As the Guardians took three out of four in the last series at Fenway Park, they look to the new series with open eyes and a chance to make an early season statement, despite the injuries.
