Red Wings Extend Win Streak to Six with Victory Over the Capitals

NHL

With the hopes of returning to the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons, the Detroit Red Wings have found success in a resurgence season and are turning themselves into contenders. Entering action on Tuesday, the Red Wings were aiming to extend their five-game winning streak, as they hosted Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, who have earned a point in their last five games (4-0-1). The Red Wings would continue to showcase their high-scoring abilities after completing an 8-3 thrashing over the Capitals. With the win, the Red Wings improved their record to 33-20-6 for 72 points and hold the top Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Capitals fell to 27-22-9 for 63 points, as they look to remain in the Wild Card hunt in the East.

The Red Wings would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first period after defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored on a quick slap-shot from the right circle that went past goalie Charlie Lindgren. With under five minutes left in the opening frame, Lucas Raymond would extend the Red Wings’ lead to 2-0 after scoring on a wrist shot in front of Lindgren. In the second period, Hendrix Lapierre would get the Capitals on the board after receiving a behind-the-back pass from Ovechkin that Lapierre put into the net. The Red Wings would score twice within a five-minute stretch to extend their lead to 4-1 after goals from Joe Velano and Gostisbehere (second). The Capitals would trim their deficit to 4-2 at 16:38, as Michael Sgarbossa would score on a ricochet shot off the goal post that he slapped into the back of the net. Before the second intermission, J.T. Compher would score a short-handed goal to extend the Red Wings’ lead to 5-2 at the break.

In the third period, the Red Wings would pick up where they left off, as Robby Fabbri would score on a power-play goal to extend their lead to 6-2. Midway through the third, Max Pacioretty would cut the Detroit lead to three goals after scoring on a power-play opportunity. However, the Red Wings would make certain to put the game out of reach after Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin would score in the third to complete the 8-3 final score. In the win, goalie Alex Lyon would finish with 18 saves on 21 attempts for the Red Wings, as they recorded their first six-game winning streak since 2019. On the other hand, Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren would have himself an off-night, as he would give up a season-high eight goals on 31 save attempts.
